O Department of Mechanical Engineering - DEM is linked to the Polytechnic School - POLI/UFRJ. The DEM was created in 1987, as a result of the merger of the Departments of Thermal Engineering and the Department of Mechanical Technology of the then called School of Engineering of UFRJ.
O Mechanical Engineering Program - PEM is linked to COPPE/UFRJ. The PEM, created in 1965, is the second postgraduate program established by the Coordination of Postgraduate Programs in Engineering at UFRJ.
POLI and COPPE are academic units of UFRJ, linked to its Technology Center.
Since 1988, DEM and PEM have worked together, under the coordination of the same member of the teaching staff, assisted by an Undergraduate Academic Coordinator and a Postgraduate Academic Coordinator.
The academic and technical-scientific activities carried out at DEM and PEM are developed by their teaching staff and by the respective undergraduate and postgraduate student bodies, assisted by the technical-administrative staff, in an integrated, stimulating and diversified environment.
