ABSTRACT:
Composite materials are widely used in various areas of modern engineering. Mechanical modeling of composites is commonly based on averaging procedure evaluating their effective properties. The review of the existing models for the effective properties of composites will be presented. This will be followed by the author's results in micromechanics of composite materials and thin-walled structures based on the multi-scale asymptotic homogenization method. The developed micromechanical models are applied to the analysis of various practically important composite structures, including 3D grid-reinforced composites with generally orthotropic reinforcements; composite wafer-reinforced shells; grid-reinforced shells, and sandwich shells with cellular cores of different geometrical configurations. The analytical expressions for the effective stiffnesses of the above composite structures will be presented. In particular, one of considered examples represents analytical modelling of the mechanical behavior of carbon nanotubes. Next, the smart materials will be addressed. Smart structures integrate sensors and actuators. They have the ability to respond adaptively to changes in environmental conditions, and therefore significantly increase their functionality and serviceability. The author's results in modeling of smart composite structures will be presented.
