O Department of Mechanical Engineering (DEM) of Poli/UFRJ will take place on the next day September 10, at 12pm, in room G-215, a meeting aimed at undergraduate students interested in learning more about CAPES/Brafitec exchange projects.
The program offers students the opportunity to complete part of their studies at French universities, with the possibility of obtaining a double degree and a CAPES scholarship.
The event will feature the participation of former Brafitec exchange students , DEM students, representatives from the International Relations Office of Poli, and the professors coordinating the department's projects.
The initiative aims to clarify doubts, share experiences and encourage students to take advantage of this opportunity for academic and cultural development.
Date and place: September 10, 2025, at 12:09 p.m., room G-215
Target Audience: DEM undergraduate students
Under Notice No. 436 UFRJ/CEPEL OF JUNE 03, 2024, Cepel is selecting a master's student to work on the theme “Thermodynamic optimization of thermal batteries”, on a full-time basis. This is a research topic of mutual interest to the University and CEPEL and is relevant to a project being developed at CEPEL for the Petrolina Solar Energy Reference Center (Cresp).
The selected student will be awarded a scholarship of R$2310,00, a food allowance of R$805,00, and life insurance of R$8,24. The awarding of the scholarship does not constitute the creation of any kind of employment relationship between the scholarship recipient and the University or CEPEL. The scholarship may last for a maximum of 24 (twenty-four) months, to be renewed after the 12 (twelve)-month period.
Thermal batteries are alternative systems to chemical batteries for energy storage, harnessing industrial thermal waste or excess energy from renewable systems that supply intermittent power to the electrical system. When harnessing thermal waste, they contribute to decarbonization by replacing fossil fuels. In the case of solar systems, which operate only during the period of solar radiation, the use of thermal batteries allows for the supply of electricity at a predefined time and can become a technological alternative in the face of the growing insertion of intermittent renewable energy into the electrical grid. Despite recent advances in thermal batteries, challenges remain for wider adoption that require analysis and optimization of costs, efficiency, and generation capacity.
The master's thesis topic, "Thermodynamic Optimization of Thermal Batteries," involves optimizing costs, efficiency, and power based on thermodynamic concepts through computer simulations of thermal cycles similar to the one shown in Figure 1. Figure 1 shows the energy recovery of cooling water from a concentrated photovoltaic (HCPV) system currently being implemented at Cresp, and the production of electricity through an Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC). This is one of the technological alternatives for thermal batteries. Other alternatives involve using the thermal waste from the HCPV system to generate cold using adsorption or absorption chillers.
