Arthur Palmeira Ripper Neto Seminars, from Mechanical Engineering Program at UFRJ, will promote, on the day July 24th (Friday), at 10 am, The lecture "Animating Matter: Reaction–Diffusion Patterns of Motion from Molecular Motors to Cilia, Microfluidics and Robots", taught by the researcher Hermes Bloomfield-Gadelha, from the School of Engineering, Mathematics and Technology and the Bristol Robotics Laboratory, University of Bristol (United Kingdom).
During the presentation, the researcher will discuss how biological and artificial systems can generate movement, perception, and organization through internal mechanisms, without the need for centralized control. The lecture will explore everything from molecular motors present in cells to applications in microfluidics, artificial muscles, and robots inspired by living systems, highlighting pattern formation models based on chemomechanical coupling and diffusion-reaction.
About the Speaker:
Hermes Bloomfield-Gadelha is the founder of the Polymaths Lab at the University of Bristol, where he conducts research integrating mathematics, physics, biology, medicine, and soft robotics. His work seeks to understand how natural systems organize movement and intelligence, transforming these principles into new technologies for robots and intelligent materials. Before joining the University of Bristol, he completed his doctorate at the University of Oxford, followed by research at Oxford and Cambridge and teaching at the University of York.
